As a young adult, it has been interesting getting different perceptions from my peers regarding where they are directing their life, if they even know. I had an interesting conversation with a person the other day who I would not consider a friend but, maybe…. an acquaintance? This girl was sitting at her laptop, eyes constantly rolling and, she would not stop complaining. Now, normally I try to not accommodate people who are acting in a certain way in order to get attention, however, for some reason I asked the question she wanted, “what’s wrong?” After I asked this I did truly hope that she would just start talking so we did not have to play the little game of, whats-wrong-no-really-tell-me-etc. Here, I had the pleasure of being accomadated and she dove head first into her story. It was a heart wrenching tale about how her schedule was overlapping regarding classes and how she has to now take 6 classes per semester in order to apply for med school in time. The first question that popped into my head was, in time for what? I was so curious I asked her. Apparently she wanted to finish school by age 23 or 24. Now, normally I give no thought to this, I have heard a variety of different paths that people are taking or planning to take. I believe that this story stuck with me because I was in awe of the precise details that this young 18 or 19 year old had already worked out. Even her speech was fast and rushed, like she was in the middle of a race. After taking a couple of days to try and understand her reasoning for racing through school/life I came to the conclusion that this is may be her own personal idea but the structure of society is setup in such a way that encourages finishing school, having kids, documenting the love you have for your “soulmate”, and starting the beginning of the end of the rest of your life.
